John Legere Joins T-Mobile USA as its New CEO

Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile (News - Alert) USA, today announced that John Legere has been named chief executive officer of the T-Mobile business unit, effective September 22. Legere, a 32-year veteran of the telecommunications and technology industries, will succeed Jim Alling, who has been serving as the company's interim CEO since June and will return to his position as COO.

"I am thrilled to join T-Mobile and lead the Company at such a pivotal time," said Legere. "T-Mobile s taking a number of significant steps to revitalize the business and I look forward to leading our team and partners to accelerate these efforts to become a force in our industry."

Formerly the CEO of Global Crossing (News - Alert), Legere, 54, managed to turn the company into a global leading provider of IP services. Under Legere's direction, the company completed the world's first integrated global IP-based network.

"John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies," said René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.

Adding, "As T-Mobile moves forward with its strategic initiatives to improve its market position, including expanding its network coverage and initiating LTE (News - Alert) service, John has obviously the right skill set to lead the business into the future."

Prior to his time at Global Crossing, Legere was CEO of Asia Global Crossing, a joint venture of Microsoft (News - Alert), Softbank and Global Crossing. Prior to that, Legere was senior vice president of Dell Computer Corporation, also serving as president of the company's EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) and Asia-Pacific operations.

T-Mobile recently announced a new promotion called "Magenta Deal Days," which begins this Friday, September 21, allowing customers to purchase any device with no money down when signing up for qualifying Unlimited Value and Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plans with a mail-in rebate card. This deal even encompasses high-end devices like the Samsung (News - Alert) Galaxy S III.
