It hasn't even been a week since the unveiling of the iPhone (News - Alert) 5, and already there are third-party accessories being release for it. More specifically, a couple of companies are selling their own dock port adapters for the new device.
While the iPhone 5 may have a number of advantages over its predecessors, its new, faster Lighting connector makes all previous docking accessories incompatible with the smartphone – not to mention all the standard power and USB cables Apple (News
- Alert) users have doubtless accrued over the years. The good news at first was that Apple is also releasing an adapter to make accessories compatible with previous iPhone models compatible with the latest iteration.
The bad news, though, is that it costs $30 – a price some have deemed unreasonable.
Fortunately, those who think $30 is too much to pay for a simple adapter can find two third-party models – one from iTronz and one from Nanotch – on Amazon selling for around half that.
Of course, there are likely to be even more on the way as we get closer to the actual launch of the iPhone 5, by which time prices may be driven even lower.
The iPhone 5 received a whopping two million pre-orders in its first 24 hours of availability, doubling the record set by the iPhone 4S. Some analysts project pre-orders will hit six million at minimum by the end of the week.
"iPhone 5 preorders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.
The percentage of those purchasing the latest iPhone who are upgrading from a previous version – or who own an iPod Touch or iPad – is likely to be high, so demand is also going to be huge for Lighting connector adapters.
Meanwhile, those updating from a previous iPhone can potentially make some money of those older models via iCracked’s new iPhone buyback, redistribution and recycling program to go toward getting an adapter.
