September to Feature Lots of High-Profile Product Announcements

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

As summer begins to wind down and we head into fall, it's time to consider the staggering number of high-profile product launches that autumn brings in preparation for the holiday season. Obviously, there's a lot of excitement surrounding the official unveiling of the iPhone 5 on September 12, but other phone manufacturers, namely Nokia (News - Alert), should also have something to capture the public's attention.

Yes, the Nokia Lumia 900 — which was thought to be Nokia's real attempt at making a top-end Windows Phone — hasn't sold as well as perhaps Nokia hoped. Well, Nokia and Microsoft (News - Alert) are apparently holding a big press event this week, September 5th, to unveil not one, but two Lumia devices running WP8.

Current rumors place the Lumia 920 as the planned high-end WP8 devices, with possible specs including a dual-core processor, 4.5-inch display and wireless charging. The second device is said to be called the Lumia 820, and should mirror the 920 the way the 800 mirrored the 900.

Motorola (News - Alert) is also holding a press conference on the 5th, supposedly to announce its new flagship device. This will be noteworthy because it'll be the first product launch since Google (News - Alert) took over the company and, if rumors of an edge-to-edge screen are accurate; the search giant may have had some say in this device's design, as edge-to-edge glass is a feature of last year's Galaxy Nexus.

Lastly, Amazon is said to be holding a press conference on September 6th in order to announce its new lineup of Kindle devices. Of course, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding these devices as well, with some saying that the E Ink Kindles will feature a new backlighting technology called "paperwhite."

Of course, new Kindles mean a new Kindle Fire. Rumors regarding this are mixed but it'll definitely still sport a 7-inch screen, likely with higher resolution and maybe even a quad-core processor. It's all just hearsay, but it would make sense for Amazon to pump up specs in order to compete with the Google Nexus 7.
