By Shankar Pandiath, TMCnet Contributor

Tata Consultancy Services (News - Alert), popularly known as TCS and one of India’s largest IT solutions and software consulting services firm, recently revealed that it has acquired 100 percent equity of Computational Research Laboratories for $34 million.

Tata Consultancy Services is touted as a IT business solutions firm that provides consulting and business services to global enterprises. It has a multi-integrated portfolio which no other firm can match. Its portfolio ranges from BPO, IT, infrastructure and engineering services. It has one of the worlds’ best trained consultant bases that is close to a quarter million and who are positioned over 42 countries. The company’s revenue for the quarter ending March 31, 2012 was over $10 billion.

Computational Research Laboratories (CRL) is a pioneer in the field of HPC or high performance computing solutions in India. Its core competency lies in creating and managing integrated HPC environments. This merger will further consolidate and enable TCS to enrich and expand its existing infrastructure, industrial and services, besides strengthening cloud-based platforms. In other words, it can now offer cloud services and integrated HPS application service to its large customer database.

HPC applications are beginning to find more and more use among large corporations where they are beginning to unlock complex business problems i.e., reducing their lead time to market. TCS has a global customer database in areas like aerospace, automotive, energy and it is already investing in the use of high performance computing solutions and services. The areas in which this offering is mainly used include simulations, visualization, modeling and data analysis.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCS, N Chandrasekaran said that this new relationship with CRL would be symbiotic. He further added that CRL's core competencies in creating, building and managing HPC environments, blended with the TCS’ focus on cloud-based, domain-rich industry platforms would enable TCS to attend to the customers growing need of HPC solutions.
