Facebook Prevents Phishing Scams

By Lyndsay Krisel, TMCnet Contributor

One of the most useful social networks around the world, Facebook (News - Alert), has not only been known to keep users in contact with multiple friends and family members, but also seems to be the perfect spot for scammers to seek and steal your personal information or hard-earned money.

The social network released a new e-mail where users can report these scams as they are recognized. The e-mail address is [email protected], and provides Facebook with these reports, so that they can “investigate and request for browser blacklisting and site takedowns where appropriate,” as it said on its security page.

“We will then work with our eCrime team to ensure we hold bad actors accountable. Additionally, in some cases we’ll be able to identify victims, and secure their accounts.”

As fun and useful Facebook can be, it can also destroy one’s personal identity through “phishing.” It is up to the network to ensure that customer’s have their personal information protected, while also maintaining their privacy. Facebook has made several efforts in order to prevent phishing from occurring.

The user based e-mail reporting will add to “internal systems we have in place to detect phishing sites attempting to steal Facebook user login information. The internal systems notify our team, so we can gather information on the attack, take the phishing sites offline, and notify users. Affected users will be prompted to change their password and provided education to better protect themselves in the future.”

The Anti-Phishing group explains worldwide that there are between 25,000 and 30,000 “unique phishing e-mail campaigns documented each month.” With Facebook’s nearly one billion users, it is a community ripe for rip-off, and deserves the same cautiousness as both e-mail and web browsing, in order to keep matters and personal information safe.
