Reporter Complaining about NBC's Olympics Broadcasting has Twitter Account Suspending after Posting Exec's E-mail Address

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

A British reporter has had his Twitter (News - Alert) account suspended after he tweeted an NBC executive's e-mail address in protest of the networks tape-delaying of the Summer Olympics in London.

Guy Adams, a Los Angeles correspondent for The Independent, a newspaper based in London, sent the offending tweet on Friday at the start of the Olympic Games. “The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven't started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think,” he tweeted, followed by Zenkel's corporate e-mail address. Zenkel is the Olympics president at NBC.

NBC has exclusive rights to broadcast the Games in the U.S. on its networks. Adams was referring to the network's practice of tape-delaying the day's events until prime time in the U.S., despite the events having occurred hours before they were actually broadcast.

Adams' account was suspended after apparently running afoul of the “Twitter Rules.” Twitter has a policy against revealing personal information. “You may not publish or post other people's private and confidential information, such as credit card numbers, street address or Social Security/National Identity numbers, without their express authorization and permission,” the social networking site's home page says.

Adams joined a growing chorus of people complaining on the social networking site against NBC's practices, using the hashtag “#nbcfail.”

Vivian Schiller, NBC's chief digital officer, took a social media potshot of her own back at her critics, albeit an indirect one. “The medal for most Olympic whining goes to everyone complaining about what happens every four yrs., tape delay,” she re-tweeted from Piers Morgan tonight executive producer, Jonathan Wald.

NBC also defended its practices itself, even if its live Internet streaming requires viewers to show they have a cable or satellite subscription and is riddled with advertisements that even interrupt competitions. There are also the standard-issue streaming playback hiccups.

“We're enjoying tremendous success with our digital offerings,” NBC Sports spokesman, Greg Hughes (News - Alert) said. “And yes, there have been some difficulties. Some on our end; some on the users' end. And we're working around the clock to give everyone a good digital experience. A small number of complaints, relative to the huge number of users, is a very positive early sign.”
