Jelly Bean's Source Code Released

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

It’s time to start creating apps, because Google has revealed the source code for its latest mobile OS, Android (News - Alert) 4.1 Jelly Bean. The proprietary binaries for the Nexus 7 tablet and Galaxy Nexus smartphone are also available, while the Nexus S and Motorola Xoom aren't far away.

The announcement was made by Jean-Baptiste Queru, who works on the Android Open-Source (News - Alert) Project. He suggests that the mobile OS takes up less space, although he cannot offer any information about the devices themselves.

As Android is an open-source solution, developers are free to see and toy with the data before its release.

So far, Android 4.1 is the only device to use Jelly Bean, although the Nexus 7 tablet will also run it. For those looking for it, the tagged release can be found under the name "android-4.1.1_r1," while "jb-dev" is the name of the development branch.

This sits nicely with the previous source codes for Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and Honeycomb, which were released in November. (Although as a fan of “Doctor Who,” a part of me wishes they'd called it "Jelly Baby" instead of "Jelly Bean.") It should be interesting to see what kinds of applications will be made available for Jelly Bean in months to come.
