AT&T Gives Boston-area Customers Insight into Local Network Upgrades

By Kris Holt, TMCnet Contributing Writer

If you’re looking to find out the most recent information on how a telecommunications company is expanding and improving in your area, those details may be difficult to come across. For residents in the greater Boston and Providence areas, however, things just got a little easier.

AT&T (News - Alert) is now offering wireless customers in the region the opportunity to access a microsite depicting enhancements which have been made to the wireless network. The “focus: Boston-Providence” microsite is getting weekly updates as it offers customers a bird’s-eye view of what’s happening to the AT&T wireless network in the region.

Those who view the microsite will see a map of the Boston-Providence area, and from there they have the chance to select the town or city they’re most keen to explore to view more detailed information for that locale. Most of AT&T’s mobile data traffic in the region is provided through enhanced backhaul (essentially, cables that physically connect sites to AT&T’s wider network) in order to give customers access to 4G connectivity.

Over the last 18 months, AT&T has added almost 25 new cell sites and upgraded almost 45 existing ones. It also added just under 800 carriers to improve service quality at peak times, provide extra capacity to lower the number of dropped calls, and increase the wireless spectrum within cell sites. Additionally, AT&T has expanded more than 1,200 network connections at cell sites using fiber lines. This helps reduce the number of dropped calls and allow for 4G access.

The microsite has been optimized for mobile viewing for most devices, and displays improvements made to the network since the start of 2011. The focus: Boston-Providence microsite covers the area from greater Boston to Worcester, as far north as southern New Hampshire, and reaching Providence and Cape Cod in the other direction.

Earlier this month, AT&T launched a similar microsite for the Los Angeles area. It has others in areas such as New York, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, South Florida and Washington, DC.
