NTT DoCoMo Develops New Tablet

By Lyndsay Krisel, TMCnet Contributor

NTT DoCoMo (News - Alert), Japan’s largest mobile operator, has recently introduced a new platform, which allows for two remote tablet users to explore and share a virtual space, pretty cool right?

Basically, what it does is it allows for two users in separate rooms to connect through video chat, and project together on a virtual screen, so they are able to explore a virtual world together.  Talk about escaping reality, this new techno-fad allows one to access a fantasy world right you’re your own home. The tablet itself is utilized by each user to guide their way around the virtual world and even allows the users to view each other within the virtual environment. The platform also uses technology that can scan the user’s conversation for certain words or phrases. When a keyword is recognized, it appears in a bubble on each of the tablets, and tapping it can produce an avatar of the person to show right there. The bubble can then serve as a link to an actual webpage.

Also introduced by the company was a new experimental prototype touch screen, which can sense taps and scrolls from its front and rear sides, or both at the same time, allowing for a new kinds of motion input.   Both platform technologies were recently represented in a demonstration at the Wireless Japan exhibition (video link) in Tokyo, to give viewers a concrete visual on how each is used. The company is also developing services, which will add on to traditional voice and video chat. It is the only company which does not carry Apple (News - Alert) products, but contains the strongest and largest network base.

The wide range of opportunities created and communication possible simply by the touch of a tablet is truly fascinating, and as we have seen for quite some time now, many people enjoy the luxury of maintaining an Internet connection via cell phones or tablets, based on the new craze for social media sites such as Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter.  The new connection opportunity is bound to excel, however the launch datse have yet to be confirmed, as both technologies are still under development. Nevertheless we hope to see more from the unique virtual platform very soon.
