House Beautiful Magazine Introduces Pinterest Sharing Option Through Digimarc Corporation Solution

By Devin Lavery, TMCnet Contributor

The June issue of home decorating magazine, House Beautiful hit newsstands this Monday, along with an added interactive feature: the ability to link images to the pin board style social photo sharing website Pinterest.  This marks the first time a magazine will allow readers to connect to Pinterest through the new 'Print-to-Pin' solution developed by the Digimarc Corporation.

The first page of a 'Kitchen of the Month' editorial includes low profile digital watermarks which are hidden in pictures and text.  The subtle design of these watermarks helps to avoid the use of QR codes or Microsoft (News - Alert) tags, which can be distracting.  Items in the article that are of interest to the reader can be scanned with a smartphone using the 'House Beautiful Connect' app for iPhones or the 'Digimarc Discover' app for iPhone and Android (News - Alert), which will then direct them to the official House Beautiful Kitchen of the Month Pinterest board.  Users can then re-pin images they choose to their own individual boards.  Retailers and advertisers, as well as the magazine itself, hope to gain new exposure through the use of the new solution and applications.  'Digimarc Discover' has been in use by the magazine for about a year, however the 'Print-to-Pin' solution is the first time readers will be able to interact directly with Pinterest.

The staff at House Beautiful has long been aware of the fact that readers scan images from the magazine to post them on Pinterest.  'Print-to-Pin' is viewed as a way of making the sharing more efficient.   Editor-in-chief Newell Turner, said,  "Digimarc’s Print-to-Pin solution is an excellent way for our readers now to share high-quality images from select editorial whenever and wherever they are inspired…we see this new Print-to-Pin experience as an important advancement toward further deepening engagement with our readers.”
