Verizon, Color for Facebook Collaborate on Live Facebook Video Sharing Over 4G Network

By Kris Holt, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Verizon Wireless has teamed up with mobile camera application Color for Facebook (News - Alert) to let customers share live video broadcasts with their Facebook friends.

Color for Facebook is harnessing Verizon’s 4G LTE network to let owners of a wide range of smartphones the opportunity to broadcast up to 30 seconds of footage in real-time on the social network. Customers of Verizon (News - Alert) will also have the opportunity to add sound to broadcasts.

Friends and fans of Color for Facebook users can receive notifications when someone starts broadcasting live video so they can tune in to see what’s happening as the video is being streamed to Facebook.

“Verizon Wireless’ (News - Alert) 4G LTE network is a huge opportunity for creating new applications,” said Bill Nguyen, chief executive officer at Color. “The performance, coverage and features available on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE (News - Alert) network establish a new platform for creativity; it is revolutionary for app developers. Color plans to develop additional features exclusively with Verizon Wireless to showcase its 4G LTE network.”

Color for Facebook users can also upload photos in batches to Facebook, sharing a number of images with a group of friends or their entire personal network with a single tap.

“This app, which highlights the speed and immediacy of video over 4G LTE, is just the first step in what we will deliver for Verizon Wireless customers,” said Kristi Crum, executive director of consumer solutions at Verizon Wireless.

The Color mobile application was launched in March 2011. Initially, it automatically shared any photos that were taken through the app with other users nearby. As the app evolved, however, it has moved into video and other types of sharing than photos.

Verizon has gradually been boosting its 4G LTE network throughout the United States. Last month, for instance, the firm announced it was enhancing its 4G network in the area of Peterborough, New Hampshire.
