By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

Industrial Technology Research Institute (News - Alert) (ITRI), the largest research and development organization in Taiwan, has it in mind to release 190 cases involving 291 patents. ITRI extends an invitation for any company to place bids on these patents by May 29th. The patents that ITRI wants to let go of fall into six categories: Chemical and Nanotechnology, Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Electronics and Optoelectronics, Energy and Environment, and Biomedical technology. Some of the patents that will go on auction will also include technologies that will help companies efficiently manufacture thin film transistor (TFT) and liquid crystal (LCD) displays. The patents being auctioned allow companies to enhance their patent portfolios and more efficiently make their products.

Since its founding in 1973, ITRI has been working around the clock to help boost technology in Taiwan's high-tech industry. The organization has worked closely with 70 CEOs and 170 companies that have led innovation in the country. By now, ITRI has gathered more than 16 thousand patents. As a consequence, ITRI now ranks number one in U.S. patents and citations in 2010.

The results of ITRI’s research and development have had its merits, gaining the organization several international awards. One such award, known as the R&D100 Awards in the United States, has been given to ITRI for four consecutive years, one particular case concerning its "On-Chip AC LED Lighting Technology." Other award-winning technologies of the organization include: "STOBA lithium battery safety technology"; "FlexUPD," a low-cost flat-screen display that is as thin as paper; "i2/3DW," an integration of 2D and 3D display technology that could be viewed with the naked eye; "Reddex," a material that can resist flame and emits zero toxins; "i2R e-Paper," a type of electronic paper that can be re-used; and "HyTAC," a protective film that is highly transparent.

Any bidding on patents offered by ITRI should be done before 5:00 PM on May 29th this year. The hour is in Taipei's time zone. Winners will be announced on May 31st. If you would like more information on the auction, have a look here.
