LG will be the backing force behind Google (News - Alert) TV, set to launch later this month.
Reuters reports that the move is an aggressive effort by LG, and production of Google TVs will start May 17th at its factory in Mexico. U.S. consumers will be able to buy the product the week of May 21.
Ro Seogho, executive vice president of LG's TV business unit, stated that LG will decide whether to expand the offering to Europe and Asia after reviewing sales performance in the U.S.
Back in January, LG announced that CES (News - Alert) 2012 was going be the platform where they rolled out the LG Smart TV with Google TV, merging the familiarity of Google’s Android OS with the convenience and comfort of LG’s 3D and Smart TV technologies.
Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics (News - Alert) Home Entertainment Company, said at the time, “LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience. Through Google TV, LG has merged Google’s established Android (News - Alert) operating system with LG’s proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience.”
Google, at the time of announcement, had over 150 apps specifically built for the TV.
LG gave no shipment target, details of prices or screen sizes.
LG debuted its own TV at CES, a set that clocked in at 84 inches. The 3-D set promised to deliver “ultra definition,” which is 3840×2160, which is four times the size of the usual Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
LG’s 84-inch set includes 3D sound, which seems is just a fancy name for manipulation of stereo so that the sounds appear to be coming from different locations.
Another feature is called 3D Depth Control, which lets the viewer control the 3D experience on the TV, by changing how strong the 3D effect is.
