VVS Virtual Video Systems (Canada) Inc. (VVS), one of the first companies to partake in the distribution of Video on Demand, just announced that it will get its hands off of its own patent portfolio in the Video on Demand (VOD) space. It will be doing this via the United States patent brokerage company TANGIBLE IP, LLC, who will arrange the sale of this portfolio.
The biggest patent in the portfolio, a patent called Video and Multimedia Distribution System, was filed back in 2006 when VOD was just starting to flourish. The Video and Multimedia Distribution System patent details a content-on-demand hosting/delivery system tailored for digital media distribution with multi-dimensional dynamic data technology that assists in the distribution and manages the information that consumers see about the media.
VOD Evangelist Freddy Kalles said, “I have had the opportunity to study the VVS patents in details recently and I believe they would constitute a strategic intellectual property asset for any company currently active in the VOD space or which is contemplating entering that area. VVS was truly a trailblazer when it comes to deploying VOD services, they laid out architecture for a better quality VOD experience, as reflected in their patent filings, that everyone is now adopting.”
The Video and Multimedia Distribution System, interestingly enough, uses a system that separates the delivery and end-user system, which in turn makes it compatible with different software setup schemes.
The full portfolio from VVS is currently considered the holy grail that will help companies employ a viable solution for current and future VOD services.
CEO John Talbot of VVS said, “We believe that our patent portfolio will be of interest to any entity that wants to operate freely in this fast-growing segment while maintaining an exclusive differentiation over the competitors and/or by monetizing the IP themselves. We made the decision to offer those assets for sale instead and let the established players in the industry decide how they will best be deployed and shared. For those in this market segment our patent portfolio will undoubtedly add real value to a company’s core asset.”
