Zynga's Purchase of Draw Something Developer OMGPOP Made Official

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Reports surfaced earlier this week that online game maker Zynga (News - Alert) was getting set to purchase a game developing company it could call its very own. Draw Something is one of the more popular new apps on the iPad and iPhone (News - Alert) and rumors persisted that the app’s developers OMGPOP had landed on Zynga’s radar. It turns out that those rumors have now come to fruition and Zynga is the proud owner of a company that might have turned into a formidable competitor given the time and resources.

With recent reports showing that games are easily the most popular category of smartphone apps, even companies like Zynga are having to reevaluate they do business. It appears that this purchase means that Zynga knows it needs to find a way to branch out in order to stay relevant. While Zynga CEO David Ko has not officially confirmed the deal, other members of both companies have spoken freely about what the acquisition means.

The final price tag (News - Alert) for OMGPOP is expected to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million. OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter will be named vice president and manager of Zynga Mobile, New York and will join an existing office there. In all, 40 OMGPOP employees are expected to be absorbed into Zynga’s offices.

While Draw Something has been incredibly popular since its release (35 million downloads in six weeks) representatives from Zynga have said that Ko has had his eye on OMGPOP for quite some time. They stress that Zynga would most likely have made this purchase even if Draw Something hadn’t taken off the way it did. Of course, Zynga and OMGPOP aren’t alone in benefitting from this move.

Reports say that one of the big improvements the game will most likely gain from Zynga leadership will be more social aspects to the game. Chat and being able to take pictures should both be incorporated soon. Zynga’s infrastructure will make this possible, while normally a game like this wouldn’t have the resources to make those kinds of additions possible.
