itsmy Paves the Way of the Future with Cloud-based Gaming

By Kerry Doyle, Contributing Writer

The increase in Web and mobile applications as well as the expansion of Web 2.0, SaaS (News - Alert) (Software as a Service), and cloud computing mean that as the number of gamers increase, the need for game development expertise and quality continues to grow. The range and types of gaming platforms that users access offer a wide range of options. Already, the gaming sector is set to handle enormous expansion as game streaming takes off. This will allow gamers to play in the cloud, paying only when they play from any device, without requiring downloads.

For developers, HTML5, the open Internet standard has helped to make ubiquitous game playing a reality. Now, itsmy has announced it will offer users a new home base and distribution channel: the itsmy Game Cloud. In May, 2012 the itsmy mobile cloud gaming service will be officially launched along with distribution by its European partners, including game operators, platforms and media houses. The pay-for-play business model is set to comprise a few different scenarios. One possibility is daily, weekly, or monthly all-you-can-play access as well as pay-per-game in addition to bundling game categories together, such as casual titles or classic titles.

According to Jukka Saarelainen, CTO of itsmy, “We worked more than one year on our game platform to create the perfect mobile web app experience for iOS, Android (News - Alert), Bada, WebOS and Windows. We are proud to offer gamers from all social networks around the globe a completely new gaming experience on touchscreen devices developed in a mix of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. For the first time you have the option to play internet games even if you are offline.”

The fact that this new game-playing model stands to revolutionize gaming around the world and that it offers gamers a new outlet for which they’ve been clamoring is an understatement. The open internet standard HTML5 won’t be completed and fully standardized until 2014. HTML5 is the newest iteration of Hypertext Markup Language, the back-end coding system that dictates how Web pages should appear. The fact that it is being used in game development is significant because HTML5 specifically addresses mobile functionality and represents the first computing language that will enable gaming on the fly.

As Sabine Irrgang, itsmy COO, recently stated, “We love high quality! Our itsmy Game Cloud features – which include playlists, friends and achievements – are optimized for a perfect UX using a touchscreen or mouse. Games can be played instantly on all devices with iOS-, Android- and Windows 7-platforms by just using any mobile or web browser.”

This is a significant development in the world of gaming and portends big things to come in the future. On Monday, March 19th, 2012, the itsmy Game Cloud will be presented during the Mobile Monday event “Launching Facebook (News - Alert) Mobile Apps and Games” in Munich, Germany.
