Facebook, Twitter Hoarders Unite: SocialSafe is the 21st Century Diary

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

I’m a hoarder. No, I’m not talking about the type of hoarding of saving useless junk for the fear of letting go of it. I’m a hoarder of memories.

If one were to open my old bedroom door closet in my parents’ house, they’d be sure find boxes upon boxes spewing with birthday cards, notes passed during History class in high school, souvenirs from my travels, and even stuffed animals – a random, packed assortment of items collected over my 26 years that I just haven’t mustered up the heart to say good-bye to.

Even after moving out two years ago, my wistful tendencies have followed me. I made sure to set aside a single drawer in my nightstand just for cards alone. But, while my souvenir collection continues to grow under my bed and in drawers in my new apartment, so do the memories I’ve accumulated on my social networks.

It’s hard enough to keep track of all my dispersed recollections, but how about all the posts, photos and links I’ve shared on my Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter accounts? What if I one day I wanted to look back on my Facebook timeline and share with my children photos from my first-ever visit to Montreal, or even compile some of the articles I’ve written and shared on Twitter (News - Alert)?

Luckily, one company has come up with a way to create our own type of scrapbook for our social history. For all you nostalgic, sentimental people out there, like me, SocialSafe is just for you.

Social Safe is a program that enables online users to back up their Facebook, Twitter, Google (News - Alert)+ and Viadeo accounts so that they can create a visually-appealing, easy-to-use, searchable digital journal. According to the creators behind SocialSafe, its appeal and necessity is in the features and peace of mind it offers.

With SocialSafe, you never actually lose your data, as it's all safely stored on your own computer. With this digital diary, Facebook users can track down every single tagged photo, comment, Like, mention, or even a single day, with only a few clicks. A Rich Search feature also enables users to easily find friends or anything said or uploaded, meaning you can scan your online “journal” for as long as you want, and without having to manually click “Older Posts” at the bottom of your Facebook wall or timeline over and over.

The same goes for Twitter account holders, whom can save their tweets for as long as they desire, rather than the typical 3,200 Twitter keeps allowed. Never fear, there will always be proof of that one oh-so-lucky time Kim Kardashian tweeted back at you.

SocialSafe also offers a backup functionality, so your fellow Facebookers can export others’ profile info and photos to zip files and other formats. It also puts users in the driver seat for complete control of backups and at what intervals they should happen.

Social Safe is available in several versions: free, which comes with limited Facebook functionality; standard, which extends to both Facebook and Twitter; pro, which includes both social networks and Viadeo; and enterprise, which encompasses all, including Google+.

Don’t think that old habits die hard. No matter how much time passes, I can assure you I will never stop hoarding my memories -- whether they are stored in cyberspace or under my bed.
