App Review: iMockups Brings Wireframe Creation to the iPad

By David Vaughan, Director of Projects, TSG Global

Software developers can rejoice if they deal with wireframes and are looking for more mobility ease from their iPad's. iMockups for iPad released by Endloop Systems is an answer to their demands. This app lets you quickly and easily create professional-looking wireframes for Web projects and iOS apps.

Start a blank project in iMockups and you are on your way. The left side of the screen is a slide-out drawer providing essential tools like add, delete and duplicate pages. On the right side there is another slide-out drawer providing pre-built website and iOS elements that you can drag onto your pages. But that's just the beginning.

Opening the app launches delivers the previous view; if you were working on a project, then start where you left off. iMockups remembers zoom, previous object sizes, and more, making it super easy to reuse various objects across the app. And by objects, of course I mean all of your wireframe shapes, text fills, buttons, etc.

There is a tool button on the toolbar where you can get links to Help and Tutorials as well as export options for either the current page or the entire project. You can convert your project to formats like .jpg, .pdf, or .bmml (Balsamiq Mockups) or save it as an iMockups file. You can even save a single page to your iPad photo library. Now, with all the cloud-based storage services out there today, why is the only way to share a project by email?  Hopefully this will change soon (hint hint).

When dragging elements into a project, you can also have all the various actions such as copy, clone (copy/paste in a single action) or delete. Like where an item is? Then lock it down. Need to move several elements? Then just select them and group away. The culmination is tapping the 'info' option. Once in this option, you can modify various properties of the selected item from a list of parameters unique to that selection.

If you can connect your iPad to a larger screen (maybe you have an Apple (News - Alert) TV and can use airplay), none the less tapping the arrow icon puts iMockups into presentation mode, enabling you to demonstrate your projects to co-workers or clients.

Custom tailed for iPad gestures, iMockups makes for a wonderful canvas to express new web ideas with simple wireframes. Endloop is certainly passionate about their latest creation, and with great reason to celebrate because iMockups has been recognized with awards such as Winner of Applied Arts - Best Mobile App 2010 Award andApp Star Runner up - Best Utility App 2010 Award.

You can get iMockups in the app store, now for 30 percent off.
