Survey Shows Americans Would Give Up Their Spouse for the Chance to Work from Home

By Amanda Ciccatelli, TMCnet Web Editor

This Valentine’s Day, TeamViewer ‘s survey entitled “Americans Want to Telecommute” reveals that five percent of Americans admit they would divorce their spouse in order to work from home. A majority of respondents believe they would be more productive telecommuting than at the office.

TeamViewer, one of the world’s most popular providers of remote control and online meetings  software, announced the findings of its survey of over 2,500 American adults aged 18 and older, conducted online by Harris Interactive (News - Alert) in January.  As more Americans discover the ability to telecommute, a surprising number of them admit they would be willing to make sacrifices in order to get the option to do so.

These astonishing statistics come from the TeamViewer survey which found that Americans would be willing to sacrifice a lot in order to work from home including:

  • Social media – 34 percent
  • Texting – 30 percent
  • Chocolate – 29 percent
  • Smartphone – 25 percent
  • ·Shopping – 20 percent
  • A salary increase – 17 percent
  • Half of vacation days – 15 percent

The survey was drafted based on TeamViewer’s experience in remote access to the workplace. It found that most Americans believe that more people want the option to telecommute (62 percent), with an overwhelming amount (83 percent) who believe that telecommuting is on the rise.

The survey found that 53 percent of Americans believe smartphones and tablets are increasing the use of telecommuting, 49 percent believe access to telecommuting is increasing, 49 percent believe telecommuting is getting easier and 30 percent believe the use of telecommuting is increasing in small businesses.

When asked about what Americans believe their own behavior would be as a telecommuter versus working in an office every day, more than half (54 percent) said they would be at least somewhat more productive, and almost a third (32 percent) said they would even be more or much more productive.

Additionally, some participants went as far as to admit they would be willing to give up daily showers (12 percent).  Women were more willing give up their daily shower than men (14 percent vs. 10 percent).  Moreover, a small amount of participants revealed they would even give up their spouse (five percent).

“While the results of this survey may seem amusing, these findings show that telecommuting will be a force to be reckoned with in the future,” Holger Felgner, general manager at TeamViewer said in a statement. “TeamViewer gives people the freedom to work from anywhere at any time and on any device.”
