Gaga over Little Monsters - Lady Gaga's New Social Site aims to Get Facebook and Google to Move Over
It has probably been hard to miss today, but pop music super star Lady Gaga has launched a social media site Little Monsters, named in honor of her moniker for her fans.
As noted in various accounts, startup Backplane – which built the site – is the brainchild of Lady Gaga's Manager Troy Carter. Not surprisingly, this is its first attempt to fulfill the grandiose mission to, "unite people around interests, affinities and movements."
Lady Gaga is no stranger to the Web and social media. Her Twitter (News - Alert) followers alone number over 19 million and growing. The site, which observers say takes its net-savvy approach from hot internet pinboard site Pinterest, has already drawn derision from those who see this as more publicity stunt than serious business and is just one more way the incredibly smart Lady Gaga has figured out how to cash in.
The site is currently in beta and by invitation only. I for one can’t wait until they open the doors. This is because I am a big monster and fan, as well as an industry observer.
Do Google and Facebook (News - Alert) have anything to worry about? I am going to go out on a limb here and say she has a shot and not a bad one. Remember both Facebook and Twitter started as fads. Underestimating star power and the loyalties of a digitally adept generation that is her following would be a mistake. As witnessed by the younger generation looking for alternatives to Facebook and not embarrassing Google (News
- Alert)+ in numbers that might be expected because they are “so yesterday,” stranger things have happened.
