Man Builds Himself a Batmobile - Minus the Flamethrower

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

In case you have a great deal of money and time on your hands this summer and you have no idea what to do with them, here’s a suggestion. Build yourself a Batmobile. I guarantee you’ll generate some headlines.

You won’t be the first, however. Casey Putsch, owner of Putsch Racing, has done just that. A fan of the Batmobile since the first film in 1989, Putsch followed the cinematic design featured in the Batman franchise’s first two films, directed by Hollywood oddball Tim Burton.

Putsch’s Batmobile features a Boeing (News - Alert) turbine engine that was stripped from a decommissioned U.S. naval drone helicopter, reports Wrote Mike Flacy of Yahoo’s Digital Trends blog. (Internal combustion engines being too boring and ordinary, I guess.)

The new 365 horsepower Batmobile is four-speed and semi-automatic and uses either diesel fuel or kerosene jet fuel. It measures 20 feet in length and 7 feet, 5 inches in width. It seats two people comfortably, weighs around 2,800 pounds and even has a trunk, in case you want to use your Batmobile to hit Costco for some value packages of paper towels and a few tubs of peanut butter. And the good news is, it’s perfectly street-legal.

It does lack a flamethrower, however, a detail that may disappoint hardcore Batmobile fans. However, one imagines the addition of a flamethrower might revoke its “street-legal” status.

And the internal controls? This is the best part. The entertainment, Web and navigation functions of Putch’s Batmobile are powered by an on-board Apple (News - Alert) iPad. It provides GPS support for the car as well as music and 3G-powered Internet (no word on which carrier powers the Batmobile). The car features connected visible light spectrum and infra-red cameras for traveling in reverse (to prevent knocking over the neighbors garbage cans, apparently).

And yes, the cockpit has a sliding canopy for you to leap out of. Batman costume optional.

Talk about turning the neighbors’ heads...
