BreakingPoint Helps to Ensure the Performance, Stability and Security in Network Devices

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Performance, stability and security is something that every user wants out of their device. If this device is running on the corporate network, it is even more vital that devices perform as expected. BreakingPoint is helping organizations to make sure the devices on their networks fit the bill.

To learn more about BreakingPoint and what the company is doing in the testing space, TMCnet’s Rich Tehrani sat down with Scott Register, director of Product Management for BreakingPoint at Interop (News - Alert) 2011. Their conversation was captured in this video

“We give our users advanced insight into the performance, stability and secure of their devices and network,” said Register. “This is what we call resiliency. We let you know how your devices will perform in the real world.”

When asked what metrics BreakingPoint uses to allow customers to test their devices, Register highlighted that they use a resiliency score so customers can measure how accurate and resilient their device is when in use. The company’s solution can also track changes over time to see if the device got better or worse.

BreakingPoint solution can also track malware. The company just added a new free update for customers, giving them access to protection against 27,000 pieces of new malware that have been identified.

At Interop this year, BreakingPoint had a number of different companies in their booth. As register highlighted, BreakingPoint is the standard for IT resiliency. For instance, Underwriters Laboratory started a network resiliency lab and they are using BreakingPoint technology. Cisco (News - Alert) is showing off their capabilities, and Juniper and other vendors are using BreakingPoint in development and to show customers how well their devices will perform in their environment.

BreakingPoint has also introduced a new feature set from the BitStream Test Lab. Traditionally the company has focused on the hard stuff, such as realistic security and customers have gone to other legacy testing providers for other layers. BreakingPoint is now entering that part of the testing market so they can be the one testing provider for customers.

The company is celebrating its win for Best in Show at Interop for FireStorm CTM (News - Alert). This solution can emulate 90,000,000 concurrent users. Carriers and government agencies need this kind of massive scale to test their environment, yet the feature set is used by everybody as they can scale performance to the level needed.

BreakingPoint also just introduced an LTE (News - Alert) test lab with significant capability in one place. “LTE is very complex; it’s hard to do,” said Register. “We even give you a map of the network. If there are things that pop up and you don’t know what they are, you can click on the screen and get instructions on what is happening on the network. It is very easy to see what is happening.”

Every network and every datacenter can be broken, according to Register. BreakingPoint can show them the “weak spot” to know what needs to happen before the company goes live.
