Calling All Preps: Pop Your Collar for Tommy Hilfiger's Pop-Up House, Now in NYC

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

In the world of preppy fashion in which boat shoes, popped collars and the oh-so-vivid combination of pink and green are the norm, one designer has remained true to its spirit and quirky aesthetic: Tommy Hilfiger. Just in time for summer when many in the prep world can be found partying in the Hamptons or at the helm of yachts and sailboats alike, Tommy Hilfiger Group is hosting the ultimate house party.

Now open to the public in Gansevoort Plaza in New York City, Tommy Hilfiger’s first-ever Prep World Pop-Up House houses a spring/summer 2011 limited edition capsule of 60 fashionable pieces for both men and women. New York is the collection’s first stop on an around-the-world tour scheduled for this summer in cities like Paris, Los Angeles and Madrid.

No matter where it stops, the Pop-Up House resembles the type of scenery found along the East Coast at this time of year. With aged shingles, copper gutters, navy window shutters, a pink door and even a “tennis racket” chandelier piece, this vintage but modern space looks to be the ultimate destination for preppy threads.

“While celebrating our 25th Anniversary all around the globe in 2010, I realized the preppy look with a twist we pioneered over the years has gone global; every corner of the world interprets it in different ways,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “I developed the Prep World capsule collection to capture that spirit of adaptability and individuality and what better way to showcase it than in a travelling authentic beach house.”

Tommy Hilfiger has designed this season’s collection to reflect his heritage of preppy classics, but with a twist. The collection goes beyond clothes and also features preppy gear like “Family Crest” refrigerator magnets, a “Prep’s Best Friend” dog leashes, “On the Lawn” croquet sets, and even M&Ms that boldly state “The Taste of Prep.”

Visitors to the house can also get the ultimate preppy educational experience by participating in workshops and get preppy style tips from the experts themselves. On Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 3, Lucky’s Lori Bergamotto will give a rundown on prep style.

The Pop-Up House is open until 9 tonight (Friday), from 10 to 9 on Saturday, and 11 to 6 on Sunday. College students who visit and shop at the the Pop-Up House will receive a 15 percent discount, and Tommy Hilfiger will donate proceeds to the Meatpacking District Improvement Association.
