Motorola Mobility, NII Holdings Form Partnership for iDEN Handset Supply

Motorola (News - Alert) Mobility – a provider of converged mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, wireless accessories, end-to-end video and data delivery, and management solutions – and NII Holdings (News - Alert) announced their partnership to extend a supplier agreement.

As part of the supplier agreement, Motorola will supply iDEN handsets to NII Holdings through 2014. The extension of agreement reflects both companies' commitment to iDEN technology as a leading platform for Push to Talk services.

NII Holdings and Motorola partnered to offer iDEN services to subscribers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru in the past 14 years.

Company officials said under the NEXTEL brand, NII Holdings is the largest iDEN network operator in the Latin American region. The company serves more than nine million subscribers.

“We are committed to offering our subscribers differentiated wireless services and with this agreement we continue to deliver on that promise with exciting and innovative devices and services,” said Greg Santoro, executive vice president and chief marketing and strategy officer, NII Holdings, in a statement.

“Push to Talk functionality continues to be a primary mode of instant communication for millions in the Latin American region, and we are pleased to continue this fast, flexible and affordable service,” Santoro added.

The supply agreement involves a range of new handsets and services for NII's next-generation networks including PTT and 3G enabled handsets and exciting devices and accessories, such as the Motorola XOOM tablet.

“Motorola Mobility and NII have enjoyed a longstanding partnership and we are encouraged by the strong growth of their customer base,” said Mark Shockley, senior vice president, general manager, Global Go-to-Market, Motorola Mobility. “Devices featuring PTT technology remain an integral part of our overall portfolio and we look forward to working with NII to bring both iDEN and next-generation products to market in the future.”

Recently, Motorola Mobility acquired Dreampark (News - Alert), a Swedish IPTV software provider. The Dreampark portfolio is expected to be integrated into the Motorola Medios service management software suite.
