The Wireless Edge: Finding the Right Balance of New Revenue vs. the Cost of Edge Computing

CAMPBELL, Calif., March 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The requirements for new applications and use cases are forcing telecom architects to reorganize the mobile cloud scheme. The new configuration will move computing and storage resources closer to the device and the user. This is edge computing—and in our latest report, we get into the precise details of just how this market will evolve over the next five years.

"At a business level, most consumer applications will be optimal not with Edge Computing at the radio site, but with computing at regional data centers located somewhere between 10 and 100 miles away," commented Chief Analyst Joe Madden. "Revenue opportunities will suffer a loss of ultra-low latency, but the savings in CAPEX from computing resources will be more important in the end."

According to Mobile Experts, edge computing adds costs to the network but also offers revenue opportunities for operators and benefits for Private LTE networks. The report estimates the revenue opportunity and the cost, to illustrate the optimal balance between these two business factors. The report includes a summary of each initiative and the technical benefits, as well as the business case for edge computing in neutral host and operator scenarios. Eight key operators are listed, and a five-year forecast for mobile operator revenues enables by edge computing includes hardware/software equipment forecasts.

"Although Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Multi-Access Edge Computing have been proposed in LTE, today it seems clear that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) consider edge computing to be related to 5G network architecture. The deployment of edge computing will follow the migration to virtualized networks--which cut costs by decentralizing the core network and pushing core networks closer to the user.   In fact, we expect networks to develop some intelligence to be able to dynamically shift the location of edge computing closer to the edge when latency or other requirements demand it, explained Mr. Madden.
