Sound Transit Taps Mobilitie for High-Speed Connectivity

SEATTLE, Oct. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether underground, over water or through densely populated areas, Sound Transit's Link light rail passengers are working, watching videos and playing games without interruption to their streaming, chatting, posting or downloading with Mobilitie's dedicated Sound Transit wireless network.

Providing unmatched speeds, seamless hand-off and connectivity, Mobilitie's network now extends from the University of Washington Station at Husky Stadium to Capitol Hill, downtown Seattle and the International District Station as the company's three-phased deployment continues further south to the Beacon Hill Station later next year.

"Sound Transit listened to rider feedback and understood the importance of having seamless, reliable wireless service available to people who ride Link," said Sound Transit Chief Information Officer Jason Weiss. "Our agency selected Mobilitie for its experience in deploying complex projects and proven background in working with the major carriers. This cellular network not only means riders can enjoy more productive commutes, but also makes it easier for Sound Transit to provide real-time rider information during service interruptions."

"Sound Transit wanted a premier, uninterrupted wireless experience for its customers and a network that would expand with their light rail system," said hristos Karmis, President and CEO of Mobliitie. "The collaborative partnership we have with them made it happen, and the result is a dramatically improved, capability rich and reliable voice and data wireless network."

Mobilitie began installing its custom-designed network last year, adding nearly 1,000 small-sized, energy-efficient antennas, repeaters and other components in tunnels, transit corridors and several stations in the Link light rail system. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T are all providing enhanced service to their subscribers through the Mobilitie network.

The company completed the first phase of its network deployment last fall when it initiated service in Link light rail tunnels from downtown Seattle to the Capitol Hill and University of Washington stations. The second phase added service from the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel (DSST) at Westlake to the University Street, Pioneer Square and International District stations last summer. Mobilitie will complete the network when it adds the Beacon Hill tunnels and station in 2018.
