Keyssa Announces Reference Design to Support Contactless Connectivity in 2 in 1 Devices
Keyssa, a leader in high-speed, contactless connectivity, today
announced at the Intel Capital (News - Alert) Global Summit the availability of the
industry's first reference platform for high-speed, contactless
connectivity for the 2 in 1 detachable market. The new contactless
solution uses Keyssa's Kiss Connectors to deliver high-speed I/O between
tablet and dock with speeds up to 5Gbps for USB SuperSpeed, providing
the I/O speed of a PC without sacrificing the beauty and elegance of an
ultra-thin form factor.
"We clearly see 2 in 1 devices taking market share from traditional
laptops," said Eric Almgren, CEO of Keyssa. "But in order for 2 in 1s to
make inroads in the enterprise market, they need to increase their
performance, including high-speed I/O between tablet and base.
Traditional mechanical connectors, including pogo pins, aren't up to the
challenge. This Reference Design combines high-speed performance with
stylish design for the next generation of 2 in 1 detachables."
Central to the reference design are Keyssa's Kiss Connectors, which are
tiny, low-power, solid-state connectors that can be embedded inside a
product, and securely move huge files between devices. Once the
connectors are attached inside the case of the tablet and corresponding
base, the tablet and base have the ability to transmit and receive USB
SuperSpeed signals at 5Gbps. Adding an additional Kiss Connector enables
a DisplayPort link at 5.4Gbps. With Kiss Connectivity, Keyssa has
unleashed a new era that will change the way devices communicate and
free engineers to design devices in entirely new ways.
"Intel-based 2 in 1 devices enable incredible flexibility tofit the way
people work and play, with sleek designs that offer no-compromise
performance," said Chris Walker, Vice President of Intel's Client
Computing Group and General Manager of Mobile Client Platforms. "The
availability of Keyssa's reference design for high-speed, contactless
connectivity for 2 in 1s brings new capabilities designers can utilize
to create exciting devices."
The reference design for 2 in 1 detachables brings the following
benefits:
-
Secure, point-to-point connection at extremely high frequency (EHF)
without wires or metal connectors, eliminating noise commonly found in
implementations with pogo pins
-
Protocol-agnostic, capable of high-speed data transfer supporting USB
at 5Gbps and DisplayPort at 5.4Gbps
-
Bi-directional
-
Supports low-speed applications allowing for the aggregation of
multiple mechanical connectors into a single bi-directional connection
-
Design-friendly form factor
"We saw the first use of Kiss Connectors to solve this specific problem
when Acer (News - Alert) announced their Aspire Switch 12 S earlier this year," said
Almgren. "With that design, Acer was able to produce their sleekest 2 in
1 design to date, without sacrificing on performance and reliability. We
realized that this represented a huge opportunity for OEMs who want to
build high-performance 2 in 1 products. This was the genesis for the
Reference Design."
The Keyssa Reference Design allows customers to rapidly deliver
differentiated products to consumers who are looking for
high-performance 2 in 1s. To learn more about Keyssa's 2 in 1 Reference
