Technavio ICT analysts highlight the following four factors that are contributing to the growth of the global telecom power systems market:

  • Increased deployment of telecom network infrastructure in emerging regions
  • Regulatory demand for reduced OPEX
  • Increased deployment of small cell power systems for LTE (News - Alert)
  • Increased use of ultra-high-capacity optical networks

Increased deployment of telecom network infrastructure in emerging regions

Almost 480 commercial long-term evolution (LTE) networks were deployed in 157 countries by January 2016. APAC and South Africa have become one of the growing markets demanding extensive network coverage to provide reliable and stable connectivity for an increased cellular subscriber base in remote areas.

According to Abhishek Sharma, a lead analyst at Technavio for M2M and connected devices research, "There is an urgent need to transform the system from diesel usage to renewable energy sources, which not only helps in cost reduction but also saves on energy. On an average telecom towers and data centers together consume more than 70% of the energy in the entire telecom sector."

Increasing deployment of small cells requires small size power backup. Cellect 600 from Alpha technologies integrates battery backup with an AC/DC power supply in a compact, sealed enclosure desiged to withstand harsh outdoor environments, which offers high-efficiency power conversion, advanced monitoring, and control. In order to improve efficiency and reliability of services, the telecom tower companies are increasingly depending on power systems, which reduces the overall costs drastically.

Regulatory demand for reduced OPEX (News - Alert)

Telecom operators are under tremendous pressure due to government regulations on OPEX. Most of the off-grid telecom sites require high levels of fuel for their continuous and seamless operation to ensure reliability in service. These remote sites have to be continuously monitored and maintained for refueling that involves logistics cost. It is crucial to reduce the operational expenses by utilizing renewable energy sources, which can be used to meet the growing demand for efficient network connectivity.

Adoption of hybrid power systems reduces the need for fuel requirements by optimizing the usage of renewable energy resources like solar panels or wind turbines or reusable battery products. Apart from the reduction in the level of fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions also get reduced drastically. This results in lowering of the operational costs to about 65% on an average.

Increased deployment of small cell power systems for LTE

With the explosive growth of mobile data traffic, telecom operators are compelled to extend the network coverage area by rolling out numerous wireless telecom networks in both rural areas and high-density metropolitan cities. APAC is heading the global LTE scenario in terms of existing and expected customers. Countries like India, Thailand, and Indonesia are in the early stages of LTE adoption whereas Japan has advanced LTE technology and is planning to upgrade to 5G.

The density of mobile devices is very high in the urban areas where operators are establishing more number of picocells and femtocells, which require DC power systems. (Pico and femtocells typically cover small areas like buildings, home and small business.) "With the rise in the deployment of small cell sites, the demand for power systems is increasing as they provide a cost-effective solution, with easy installation, and high operational efficiency," says Abhishek.

Increased use of ultra-high-capacity optical networks

The world is now virtually interconnected enabling efficient and easy communication that delivers better economic growth. Broadband connectivity across all regions is providing the channel for transfer of communication with higher speeds. Due to Internet of Everything (IoE), internet traffic is growing tremendously and has its implications on the telecom broadband infrastructure in fulfilling the capacity requirements. Telecom operators have to invest more in expanding effective and efficient high capacity fiber optic networks that cater to the increasing subscriber demand. Fiber to the home (FTTH) requires renewable power systems to deliver bandwidth to every household with broadband connectivity on a continuous basis.

Most of the countries in the African region will expand the growth in the broadband market with the rise in economic conditions. Internet traffic in the developing nations will grow six-fold in the coming five years. Thus, the increasing deployment of the FTTH infrastructure is expected to harness the growth of the power systems industry.
