Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE:SSNI) today announced the winners of
its Starfish™ Developer Day in San Jose. Starfish is Silver Spring's
public cloud Internet of Things (IoT) network and data platform that
helps entrepreneurs, device makers, and academics support and accelerate
the development of new IoT devices and services. Leveraging Silver
Spring's Starfish Hardware Developer Kit and secure access to Silver
Spring's data platform, each team showcased prototypes for smart city,
smart energy, resource conservation, and other applications for public
and commercial uses to three local judges: Shireen Santhosham, Chief
Innovation Officer, City of San Jose; Michael Pachos, Investor, Samsung (News - Alert)
Ventures; and Sebastian Duesterhoeft, Silver Lake Kraftwerk.
"We're impressed by the early prototypes created using Starfish, and are
encouraged by both the creativity and enthusiasm from developers in
wanting to develop applications on Silver Spring's platform in the
future," said Philippe Gaglione, EVP of Internet of Things/Starfish
Platform, Silver Spring Networks. "By focusing on proven, secure, and
reliable open standards-based technology, we believe that applications
that have the potential to help solve some of our most pressing 21st
century challenges can be realized."
The winning teams are:
-
X2 Biosystems, Inc. for its project to use Starfish across stadiums,
sports facilities, schools, and public parks combined with its Head
Impact Management System to monitor, assess and action appropriate
care for athletes in high-impact sports in real-time.
-
Rahul Dubey, an independent developer, for his proof of concepts
around energy theft detection using smart grid data without extra
hardware, and acoustic sensors attached to smart streetlight networks
for increased security, better traffic management and emergency
response.
-
Seevider, Inc. for its vision sensor-based all-in-one smart city
application for parking, automated enforcement, surveillance
monitoring and lighting management, using off-the-shelf cost effective
hardware components combined with customized algorithms and data
analytics.
"We're thrilled to leverage Starfish to help expand the reach of X2
Biosystems' innovative sensor and data analytics platform to help reduce
the risks and occurrence of concussions and head impact injuries in
high-impact sports," said John Ralston (News - Alert), CEO, X2 Biosystems. "For
developers looking to accelerate the proliferation of their devices and
services, Silver Spring offers a connectivity solution that is secure,
high performing and has low latency backed by its experience in building
some of the world's largest IPv6 IoT networks."
"I'd like to thank Silver Spring for helping the developer community
drive new innovation in growing application categories such as smart
city and smart energy through Starfish," said Dubey. "Through its open
standards-based technology, the opportuities for creation of new
devices and services for public entities, the citizens they serve,
enterprises, small businesses, and consumers are limitless."
Starfish, which is being deployed in San Jose, offers a platform that
includes standards-based IEEE (News - Alert) 802.15.4g wireless interoperability
standard (Wi-SUN), as well as speeds up to 2.4 Mbps, 10 millisecond
latency, up to 50 miles in point-to-point range, and multiple network
transports, along with industrial-grade security, reliability, and
scalability.
In addition to San Jose, Silver Spring intends to engage third parties
for Developer Days in other cities where Starfish will be deployed
including Bristol, Chicago, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Kolkata, London, and
