Brunswick, Missouri, American Water Charitable Foundation and Missouri American Water Dedicate New Downtown Courtyard Area
A ribbon cutting and dedication was held this week for the newly
completed Brunswick Downtown Courtyard. This project was chosen for a
$50,000 Building Better Communities grant in 2014 from the American
Water Charitable Foundation and the National Recreation and Park
Association (NRPA). The Brunswick Redevelopment & Revitalization
Committee was one of only four communities awarded this grant nationally.
The event brought together local government officials, business owners
and nearby residents for the dedication of this new public space. During
the dedication, speakers from Brunswick Redevelopment & Revitalization
Committee, Missouri American Water, the National Recreation and Park
Association, and local business and community leaders acknowledged this
project as an opportunity to enhance the quality of life in the
community and heighten the appreciation of nature and conservation of
natural resources.
"This project was selected to receive a Building Better Communities
grant because it fosters children and families' appreciation for the
environment in a fun and engaging way that benefits the communities we
serve," said Nick Rowe, member of the board of trustees for the American
Water Charitable Foundation and senior vice president of American
Water's Central Division. "Projects such as this support American
Water's core values of community stewardship and environmental
sustainability, and are also aligned with areas of importance to the
company's employees, including child welfare and education."
The new outdoor space is equipped with special educational learning
stations for children which will help foster the next generation of
environmental stewards in Brunswick. In addition, the space will be a
gathering place and can serve as a venue for community functions and
other educational events.
"This courtyard space has taken over five years to get to where it is
today; and because of American Water Charitable Foundation's generous
support it is now the centerpiece to Brunswick's vibrant downtown
business district. This project demonstrates what can be accomplished
when a community pulls together and works toward a common goal," says
Lynn Anne Switzer member of the Brunswick Redevelopment & Revitalization
Committee.
n addition to the grant award from the American Water Charitable
Foundation, Missouri American Water also provided funding that was used
to purchase and install a commercial gutter and commercial rain barrel
to conserve water for the courtyard and help with watering.
"Missouri American Water is proud to be involved in this project," said
Frank Kartmann, President, Missouri American Water. "As a member of this
community, we wanted to do our part in helping our partners maintain
this great space for residents."
