Data Breach and Other Cyber-Related Public Statements Up Nearly 20% in 2nd Quarter 2015, According to Data Compiled by CrisisResponsePro.com

NEW YORK, Aug. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Data breach communications are up, financial misdeeds down, according to data released today by CrisisReponsePro.com, a web startup that tracks public statements by companies during crisis-related events.

Public statements collected by CrisisResponsePro that were issued by organizations in response to data breaches and other Internet- or computer-related issues rose by 19.6% in the second quarter of 2015 when compared to the first quarter, according to the most recent statistics for the period ending June 30, 2015. By contrast, statements related to financial issues decreased 27.9% when compared to Q1. Financial-related crisis statements now represent just 5.4% of the total public statements collected, down from 8.6% in 2014.

"Data breaches are the crisis de jour," said Jim Haggerty, founder and CEO of CrisisResponsePro.com. "We've been cataloging these statements on a daily basis since 2013, and what is most remarkable is the rise in public responses when a data breach or other IT crisis hits."

Haggerty continued: "Consider this: In 2013, our CrisisResponsePro.com software recorded fewer than 30 public statements related to data breaches or other cyber-related crisis events. In 2014, we collected 130. In 2015, we are on pace to catalog nearly 300 data breach communications — that's more than five each week by major companies or organizations facing these issues."

CrisisResponsePro.com is an innovative new subscription software that facilitates crisis, litigation and other critical communications response. Using a proprietary methodology, CrisisResponsePro.com collects and catalogs thousands of statements issued each year by companies and organizations in response to crisis events. These statements can be searched and reviewed by CrisisResponsePro users at the touch of a button to assist organizations in responding to their own crises or sensitive reputational events. There are currently more than 6,500 statements in the CrisisResponsePro.com database.

While not a scientific survey of the crisis evens organizations experience, the statistics offer insight into the types of public responses issued in the wake of unexpected events that threaten to have negative reputational consequences for a company or organization.

Public response to legal issues, accidents and product or service issues remained steady during the past year and — despite the rise of cyber-related crisis response — still dominate the statistics. Legal issues represented 24% of the statements in the first two quarters of 2015 and 22% of 2014 statements, while accidents accounted for 16.7% of public statements in 2015 and 17% in 2014. Product or service issues remained steady as well, representing 15% of public statement in both 2014 and 2015.

While these areas were static, the areas of most movement were in cyber crises and financial-related issues, with data breaches and other IT-related events showing the largest jump over time.

As to the decline in public statements related to financial matters in this most recent quarter, Haggerty said: "We've seen a steady decline in statements related to financial crises over the past several quarters. We suspect that as the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath fades in our collective consciousness, so too does the need to confront the type of public crisis that would have landed a company on the front page just a few years ago."
