Remote Wireless Controlled Excavator by Oryx Simulations Technology

UMEÅ, Sweden, March 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

There is something spooky about the excavator in Eskilstuna, Sweden. It shovels gravel and dust, but there is no operator in the cabin! But take it easy, it is fully controlled by the operator working remotely in Barcelona, 2,200 kilometers away. This is only possible with the technology from Oryx Simulations working in collaboration with Ericsson and Volvo Construction Equipment.

All this happened in the Ericsson booth at the Mobile World Congress and it showed that the future of remote controlling heavy machinery and vehicles is already present.

The industry's need for remote wireless technology

Until now there has mainly been a demand from the consumer market for faster internet connection. But in the coming years, with self-driving cars, connection requirements will grow also from industry for a fast and secure mobile network.

The roll-out of a firstSwedish 5G network will take a few more years. But already there is technology developed and Oryx Simulations are on track to show how it can be used.

The range of uses is expected to be very large with the new technology. Smart factories, power grids and machines are around the corner and as Oryx Simulations are included so early in development this can mean a huge impact for the Umeå company.

Remote wireless controlled port cranes, mining vehicles and wheel loaders

Derny Häggström says that many ports are already using Oryx Simulations simulators in their daily work for their remotely controlled port cranes. These cranes are partially automated and self-operational and capable of handling goods, but in some situations the crane operator must step in and take over. This is done via remote control within the port area.

Further on, Oryx Simulations together with Luleå University has developed automated and remote controlled mining vehicles and wheel loaders.

Remote wireless technology is the future, the industry's needs and uses are very large and, in the midst of these developments, is Oryx Simulations. With our knowledge we will continue to contribute to changing the standards of training in and operating heavy machines.

Swedish-based Oryx Simulations is a pioneer in the field of advanced simulators for forestry, construction, and mining machines. The company has successfully and rapidly driven technological development and has established partnerships with several heavy-machine manufacturers.

We at Oryx Simulations look forward to meeting you at Intermat Paris in France to tell you more about us, the world leaders in the simulator industry. We will be waiting for you at Hall 5A L089.
