WSO2 and Axiata Launch Radical New Open Source Digital Enablement Platform for Mobile Network Operators: WSO2.Telco
Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) - WSO2 Inc. and Axiata Group Berhad
(Axiata) today launched WSO2.Telco, a radical new open source platform
for digital enablement. Built by Axiata's digital services unit, Axiata
Digital Services (ADS) and its Sri Lankan operating company, Dialog
Axiata PLC (Dialog), and based on the powerful open source WSO2
middleware, WSO2.Telco is a breakthrough cloud-ready solution that
enables mobile network operators (MNOs) to easily establish an agile
collaboration layer with Web-centric APIs. The platform represents a new
milestone in agility and scalability, allowing telcos to expose, manage
and orchestrate multiple network services at a fraction of the cost of
legacy systems. WSO2.Telco debuted at Mobile World Congress 2015,
running March 2-5, 2015 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona.

WSO2.Telco: Designed for Today's MNOs
WSO2.Telco is an open source cloud-ready smart exchange that enables
mobile network operators to interoperate easily and securely-via
Web-centric APIs-with diverse services in the mobile Internet ecosystem.
Based on powerful open source WSO2 middleware, WSO2.Telco enables
operators to build and leverage partnerships in the Internet space
rapidly, at minimal cost of entry, minus the process constraints that
commonly stifle integration projects.
WSO2.Telco is comprised of the essential building blocks for enabling an
interoperable ecosystem to be built at the single-operator, country,
regional and global levels. WSO2.Telco, deployed as an on-premises
gateway within a MNO ecosystem, provides a one-stop platform for telco
integration, identity, API management and much more. Integrations to
southbound telco services are quick and easy via pre-built adaptors. The
underlying orthogonal toolset of the WSO2 middleware platform enables
telcos to expand into newer domains, such as IoT and machine-to-machine
(M2M) seamlessly.
WSO2.Telco, deployed as a cloud gateway, provides the above capabilities
along with the ability to build a federated telco solution that forms a
bigger telco ecosystem involving MNOs, aggregators, partners,
application developers, and other cloud gateways. Utilizing WSO2's cloud
and platform as a service (PaaS) capabilities, the cloud gateway
deployment enables multi-operator aggregation, discovery, routing and
interconnectivity of services. It also aggregates services exposed by
other hubs through gateways and via direct connections fro mobile
network operators. Additionally, it provides a single point of
integration for enterprises and service providers, as well as
comprehensive administration, rating and reporting.
The modular WSO2.Telco enables an extensive variety of use cases.
Customers, partners, and internal and external systems and services can
be quickly integrated in a connected, adaptive and collaborative
business ecosystem. Significantly, WSO2.Telco is GSMA (News - Alert) Mobile Connect
ready. As a result, MNOs can easily start with a cloud or on-premises
Mobile Connect identity server and then grow the system to encompass
state-of-the-art API management and orchestration for use cases ranging
from billing to advertising, e-money, e-health, e-government, M2M and
more.
The open source WSO2.Telco platform is backed by experienced telco
development and DevOps teams along with WSO2's global capabilities
supporting large-scale enterprise platforms. In addition, the
development team is working closely with various technology partners and
will be announcing selected global systems integrator and managed
services partners to enable rapid deployment of this groundbreaking
platform.
WSO2.Telco: Built on Proven Success
WSO2.Telco builds on technologies first applied to the successful
API-driven solution developed at Dialog, and Axiata's recently launched
Mobile Internet & Fulfillment Exchange (MIFE), which connects all Axiata
OpCos to a central hub, both powered by WSO2 middleware. The overall
solution deployed in Sri Lanka has generated huge interest from
thousands of developers whose products and services offered to Dialog's
9 million customers have realized a new revenue stream, which is growing
20% every month.
Anthony Rodrigo, CIO of Dialog Axiata Group, said, "Two years ago
my team started building what is now WSO2.Telco on top of WSO2's core
platform. The decision was simple. Why re-invent the wheel, why pay over
the odds to do it? The result: we have dramatically reduced our costs
while increasing our agility. In turn, this has opened up myriad
business opportunities. Axiata has integrated the whole group in nine
months from scratch, and our IT organization can now work as fast as any
external partners we want to engage. Better still, our internal teams
are now asking for our APIs."
Mr. Rodrigo continued, "Why open source? Telcos must adapt and evolve.
Open sourcing WSO2.Telco will allow MNOs to establish a new
collaboration layer that enables friction-free interoperability and
partnership. A great example is the huge opportunity Mobile Connect
represents if telcos act together."
Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder, CEO and chief architect, said,
"In today's connected world, APIs play a pivotal role in enabling telcos
to extend relationships with partners and customers across the mobile
Internet and drive new business models. Working with Axiata has enabled
the creation of a platform specifically designed to support the needs of
the telco industry, which significantly reduces the time to launch an
API-driven platform into the market and derive value from it. Built on
our powerful, award-winning platform, WSO2.Telco provides a compelling
solution that is effectively built by telcos for telcos, which will be
supported by a dedicated team of telco experts."
