Huawei Set to Bring First Smartwatch to Mobile World Congress Event

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 event is easily one of the biggest events in mobile technology worldwide. Huawei (News - Alert), a major presence in the global telecommunications market, it looking to add to the excitement. Huawei has already brought some of its smartphones and tablets center stage at CES (News - Alert), which took place last month in Las Vegas. Making an appearance at MWC, meanwhile, is something of a major development for Huawei, for its first-ever smartwatch will be shown off at the big show in Barcelona, starting February 24.

Ahead of the show, however, Huawei was playing its smartwatch plans very close to the vest, not releasing much in the way of details about the device. Nor did the company divulge much about the new smartphone the company was planning to show off at the event. It certainly didn't say much about the pair of new tablets the company was also looking to bring to the big show. However, reports did suggest that Huawei was planning a separate launch event for the new smartphone in addition to its announcement at MWC 2014.

This is a good development for Huawei, who is currently ranked third in the global smartphone market behind the top two of Apple and Samsung (News - Alert). Huawei is a very big deal in the Chinese market, which gives it access to a very substantial market indeed, but getting outside of China reveals that there's not much brand recognition for the company. Huawei outside of China is mostly known for networking hardware, not for personal devices, and that's a development that's going to somewhat hamstring the company as it looks to advance.

But Huawei is also putting on quite a push in terms of the product side of marketing. We've got all the things recently mentioned coming down the pipe, but reports also suggest that Huawei is putting together a video game console known as the Tron, which it showed off back at CES (News - Alert). Now, it's looking to expand into wearable devices, a market that was held rather nicely by fellow Chinese maker ZTE, as well as step up its portable device offerings.

The more diverse a company can get when it comes to product offerings, the better a chance it has of success. Naturally there are limits to this—too much diversification results in diffuse product offerings that can't easily be cross-promoted—but putting all a company's eggs in one basket, so to speak, really doesn't help. While the market for wearable devices is a bit slim right now—Canalys suggested shipments of around 500,000 for 2013 globally—it's expected to pick up substantially as more of the big name makers like Apple and Google—not to mention Microsoft (News - Alert) and the like—join in the fray. Canalys' numbers for 2014, meanwhile, suggested a huge increase to reach five million.

Huawei bringing out more devices, and making said devices available globally, should be a big help for the company overall, but it's going to have a lot of competition in virtually every market it's looking to enter. To really stand out, it's going to have to make a very clear value proposition to potential buyers. What is it about Huawei gear that makes it so very important to have on hand? What does it do better than anyone else can? Answering these questions will be a big start, and hopefully a start that Huawei gets at the MWC 2014 event.
