Vanguard Software Solutions (VSS) recently announced that it will unveil its real-time HEVC (H.265) software encoder at IBC 2012. Vanguard Software is one of the premier providers of digital video and audio compression solutions to OEM customers and experts in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC CODEC technology.

By developing the next-generation of HEVC (H.265) software encoders, Vanguard has been successful in enhancing the real-time performance on PC platforms via built-in cloud scalability while ensuring optimized quality and bitrate for video distribution and communication markets - a marked improvement over currently available encoders based on the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard.

In a release, Irena Terterov, CEO and founder of VSS, said that, “Competition for digital video distribution over wireless networks, the Internet, and cable and satellite broadcasters is compromising both the quality and reliability of these distribution networks. HEVC reduces the bitrates necessary to achieve high-quality, lessening the load on networks, increasing reliability which creates the opportunity to distribute additional video content and to support more customers without deploying more network resources. Our HEVC software SDK will be available later this year, while VSS HEVC hardware codecs for FPGA and ASIC implementations are also in development.”

The VSS encoder which is based on the updated HM-8.0 HEVC reference code has been developed to encode video at much lower bitrates than H.264/MPEG-4 AVC without disrupting or compromising on quality levels.

The ISO/IEC (News - Alert) Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) established the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) to drive the development of HEVC standard over the previously used H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard. Once again proving its leadership within the industry, VSS has gone ahead and introduced the first HEVC real-time software Encoder SDK for PC.
