Cisco Joins Hands with Verizon Wireless to Demonstrate Mobility Portfolio at CES

Cisco (News - Alert) demonstrated its mobility solutions incorporating technology from Starent Networks, along with Verizon Wireless, during the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)) in Las Vegas. With Starent, Cisco is a proponent of LTE technology. LTE Technology enables service providers to give their customers a rich user experience across multiple access networks. It facilitates increased radio capacities and improved speed data networks.

As a co-participant in Verizon Wireless’ LTE Innovation Center and the CES event, Cisco provided support to many LTE demonstrations which employ its Packet Data Network Gateway (News - Alert) (PGW) solution. The PGW is an important aspect of the Verizon Wireless’ LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network as well as the overall end-to-end core network product meant for mobile and converged service providers. Its Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW) solution has been customized to deliver mobile operators with the highest levels of flexibility in scripting their networks, along with heightened performance and the intelligence which is a pre-requisite for high-demand multimedia services and an overall improved subscriber experience. The Verizon Wireless LTE Innovation Center enables an environment for companies from varying stratospheres and industries to collaborate with one other to evolve cutting edge products that will make full use of 4G LTE technology.

Both Cisco and Starent Networks (News - Alert) have a history of a long association with Verizon Wireless. In February 2009, Verizon chose Starent Networks as one of its mobile core vendors for its 4G LTE network installations and is also employing its multimedia core network equipment to provide next-generation multimedia applications to consumers.

Verizon recently also chose Starent’s Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) as part of its mobile core infrastructure. The inclusion of this functionality will enable Verizon Wireless to deliver a more thorough experience to its consumers when roaming outside North America on GSM/UMTS (News - Alert) networks. Verizon Wireless at present gives voice roaming in 215 destinations and data roaming in 195 destinations. Collaborating with Starent and other network infrastructure partners, Verizon Wireless has concluded data calls over its 700 MHz spectrum in Boston and Seattle in August 2009. This also signaled the next step in installing its LTE 4G wireless network, which is being created on the 3GPP Release 8 standard.

Verizon Wireless’ network brings together Cisco technologies, like the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System, Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers, Cisco ASR 1000 Series Routers and the Starent ST-series to build both capacity and capabilities of backhaul and packet core for its 3G/4G mobile Internet offerings.

Learn more about 4G wireless technology at the 4GWE Summit, an event collocated with ITEXPO East 2010, to be held Jan. 20 to 22 in Miami. This is the event you need to attend if you want to understand the role that IP communications technologies will play in the blossoming 4G wireless market. Register now.
