Parrot Unveils Flower Power: Bluetooth Plant Monitoring Technology

Electronics enthusiasts have seen the unveiling of many new gizmos and gadgets at CES (News - Alert) 2013 this week. There was Nvidia’s Tegra 4 processor and its handheld gaming device, Project Shield, Disney’s (News - Alert) new partnership with JAKKS that will expand virtual interaction with its toys, to HealthSpot reinventing healthcare through technology with a new telehealth system,  but the oddest unveiling may be the Bluetooth plant monitoring system from Parrot.

Parrot, which usually specializes in quadcopters and Bluetooth audio products, has unveiled its latest quirky Bluetooth gadget, the Flower Power. That’s right folks, now your plants will have the privilege of using a Bluetooth gadget every day. This latest innovation in gardening was unveiled at CES 2013 in Las Vegas this week.

The Flower Power, albeit as useless as some may seem to think it is, is a bit sophisticated. The actual piece itself is a pronged fork you stick into your plant which then records and relays the data collected to your iPad or tablet app.

Once you enter the type of plant that you have into the app, the Flower Power will refer back to its database and tell you whether your plant is getting enough sun exposure, whether it’s too hot or too cold, and on which days it needs watering. The Flower Power will also be able to read data from your lawn.

The Flower Power actually isn’t the only plant monitoring technology available on the market. Using NASA Mars Rover Technology, EasyBloom offers a similar plant monitoring device, EasyBloom Plant Sensor. Unlike Flower Power, EasyBloom is not equipped with Bluetooth capabilities, but takes a more scientific approach using Plant Doctor Algorithms to assess the health of your plants.

Bluetooth technology has been around for years, most commonly used for hand free calling for telephones as well as late model vehicles. The Flower Power is expected to hit the market sometime later this year with no word on how much green it will run customers.
