Five Star Equities Examines 3G and 4G Handset Adoption Based on ABI Research Report

A report from ABI Research (News - Alert) examines how communications equipment companies are benefitting from the intensive growth of high-speed 3G and 4G handset adoption. The report predicts 3G and 4G handset shipments will comprise more than 50 percent of the total handsets shipped this year.

Five Star Equities, which provides equity research on both VirnetX Holding Corporation and Alcatel-Lucent, is now examining the outlook for the technology sector with respect to ABI's forecast. The ABI report also mentions that in the second half of 2011, tier one smartphone vendors began to redouble their efforts to promote their smartphone lineups to upwardly mobile smartphone owners in emerging markets.

Five Star releases regular market updates on the technology sector to enable investors to make the best investment decisions to maximize their returns. The company is focused on equities that offer growth opportunities, value and strong potential return. They strive to offer the most up-to-date market activities and deliver information through research reports and newsletters for their members. According to Kevin Burden, vice president and practice director, mobile devices, for Five Star, North America's high proportion of high-end 3G and 4G smartphone sales “underscores what is at stake in the patent battles between Apple, Samsung (News - Alert), Motorola, Google, HTC, Microsoft and even British Telecom.”

VirnetX Holding Corporation, which Five Star follows, offers Internet security software and technology with patented technology for 4G LTE (News - Alert) security. The company announced last month that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued an order to deny a request by Cisco Systems (News - Alert) for inter partes reexamination of its U.S. Patent No. 7,188,180.

“We are very pleased with the USPTO's decision to reject Cisco's arguments with respect to the '180 patent,” said Kendall Larsen (News - Alert), president and CEO of VirnetX. “This decision reinforces our belief in the strength of our intellectual property.”

Communications service provider Antel, based in Uruguay, teamed up with Alcatel-Lucent last month to deliver the first commercial 4G/LTE wireless network in a Latin American country.

“Alcatel-Lucent's combination of global experience and LTE track record, allow us to bring very high speed mobile broadband services into our subscribers' homes and offices, unlocking a wealth of services to enrich their mobile broadband experience,” said Carolina Cosse, president of Antel.

Alcatel-Lucent is teaming up with Verizon this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to demonstrate the power of 4G LTE networking for consumers and retailers. The companies are demonstrating a connected retail shopping experience that combines 3D telepresence, cloud computing, videoconferencing and ultra-high bandwidth connectivity over 4G LTE.
