Before his work at FirstHand Technologies, Hattey served in executive positions at 3Com, EFJohnson Company, RACOM, General Electric, Ericsson and others. He earned bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and computer engineering from the University of Michigan and his master's degree in business administration from Duke's Fuqua School of Business.
