The demands on railway infrastructure are changing. After many years of managing decline, the last two decadeshave seen a marked reversal in rail usage and investment. Railinfrastructure is under pressure to provide more train paths, higher availability, and better value for money. Furthermore, passenger and environmental trends mean rail must alignitself more closely with other modes to offer more attractiveand sustainable journey options. In its communication A Sustainable Future for Transport, adopted in June 2009, the European Commission noted:“Upgrading the existing infrastructure – also throughintelligent transport systems – is in many cases the cheapestway to enhance the overall performance of the transportsystem.”Recent advances in telemetry have expanded the possibilitiesfor real-time monitoring of infrastructure assets, unlockingsignificant performance benefits and improving operationalefficiency. Machine-to-machine (M2M) systems deliver a “live”infrastructure that optimizes itself, communicating real-timedata on a host of asset-monitoring functions. This is drivinga fundamental shift from reactive to predictive maintenance, which in turn maximizes asset life and brings down costs.
