Intel’s new Sandy Bridge microarchitecture is changing how software applications run and perform on server platforms. In order for your application to tap the full power of these new devices, your company will need to update its software and, more importantly, the hardware platforms on which they run. Changes to Intel’s new Xeon® E3 and E5 series of microprocessors include new instructions used to accelerate common encryption tasks and floating point calculations, as well as core counts and cache per CPU. This paper offers a guide to the critical thinking that Independent Software vendors (ISVs) need to adopt, validate and transition to the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture.
