The past few years have shown an increasing trend towards server virtualization - an aspect of information technology that is firmly establishing itself as one of the most important trends within businesses today. In server virtualization the resources of the servers are broken up and allocated in discrete computing units. Software is used to divide the physical server into multiple virtual environments, called virtual or private servers. This methodology is expected to have a broad influence on the way IT departments manage infrastructure within the next several years. Major areas of businesses impact include; greater return on capital expenditures, cost reduction, swifter application testing and deployment, support of green computing initiatives and efficient backup and storage. A report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. states that the virtualization software market topped $2.2 billion in 2008 and is expected to grow to over $10.6 billion by the end of 2013.
