The Need for Active Quality Assurance in Carrier-Class VoIP Networks

Sonus

Abstract:

While IP networks and Voice over IP (VoIP) networks share much in common, there is a fundamental difference: VoIP networks have a lower tolerance for dropped IP packets and transmission delays. A dropped call or hard-to-understand conversation is far more likely to frustrate end users than a slight delay in downloading a Web page, even though the same network problem might be the source of both. In order to detect and prevent problems like these, many VoIP network operators employ analytic tools to study the realtime Quality of Service (QoS) measurements of key network elements. However, QoS measurements alone can often give operators a false impression of their network's true effectiveness.
