TMCnet Workplace Award: Tech Diversity

Celebrating the technology companies committed to opportunity for all

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games showed the world how incredible American athletes can be – winning 121 medals. Perhaps the most striking observation about the U.S. team was its multicultural nature. If there ever was a stereotypical American look, it has dissolved over the years and the country is better off as a result.

Of course, many Olympic sports are based on teams – not unlike a corporation, reminding us that the multicultural U.S. triumph which was the Rio Olympics can be a guide for how to build better corporations.

Harvard Business Review surveyed 1,800 professionals and showed companies with more diverse management are more innovative and perform better than their peers, confirming that it’s not just Olympic athletes who can benefit from this effect. Similar research has shown a direct link between increased diversity and similar levels of creativity and ease in hiring talent.

Yet, with all this research to support diversity, many were quite shocked last year when it was revealed the combined African-American workforces of many of the world's largest tech companies could fit on a single jumbo jet. Once the news came out, the tech industry became center-stage for increasing workplace diversity.

This is the reason TMCnet launched the Workplace Excellence Award for Tech Diversity, celebrating the drive towards a more multicultural work environment in the tech field.
