To help enhance the delivery of their IP-based video service U-verse TV, AT&T (News - Alert) Inc. has announced they will utilize Sun servers and modular arrays from Sun Microsystems.

AT&T's IP-based television service includes over 320 linear channels and boasts more than 26 HD channels.

According to a Wednesday news release, "the servers and arrays will be rolled out in new deployments of IP-video super hub offices and IP-video hub offices in the AT&T U-verse network."

Sun will provide for AT&T, their Sun Fire X4600 servers as well as the Sun StorageTek storage arrays. With these offerings, AT&T will be able to deliver video to customers and provide easy, continuous access to their U-verse TV Video-on-Demand Library.

The AT&T solution will include the Sun Fire X4500 servers, for improved storage, performance and cost savings.

Commenting on the announcement, Ernie Carey, vice president, Advanced Network Technologies, AT&T said in a statement to the press, "As we expand availability, we are also building out a world-class, IP-based infrastructure that offers strong performance and serviceability for the needs of consumers both today and tomorrow. Sun's high-capacity servers bring next-generation technology, processing power and storage capacity to the U-verse network."

Help with managing the system will be provided to AT&T by Sun Support Services and Sun Professional Services.

"Sun is helping to radically reset the economics of IPTV," also commented John Fowler, executive vice president of the Systems Group, Sun Microsystems (News - Alert) in a Wednesday statement.

"Sun offers an exceptional IPTV (News - Alert) infrastructure that scales to support a massive number of consumers. This means we can help AT&T deliver video and other online services to consumers in a cost-effective way which wasn't possible just a few years ago."
