Ruckus Wireless Inks IPTV Deal with Deutsche Telekom

Ruckus Wireless (News - Alert) has signed a landmark deal with T-Home, a division of Deutsche Telekom AG, a European communications provider. Ruckus Wireless will supply 802.11a Smart Wi-Fi systems to enable in-home wireless distribution of T-Home’s Entertain Comfort IPTV (News - Alert) service.

Deutsche Telekom is reportedly private-labeling the Ruckus system as the Speedport W 100 Bridge under its T-Home brand. Customers can buy the Speedport W 100 from more than 700 Telekom shops and T-Home’s online portal. Ruckus Wireless Smart Wi-Fi system is being offered by T-Home as the only in-home wireless distribution option for its IPTV service.

The company is providing Speedport W 100 Bridge (a WiFi (News - Alert) access point and WiFi adapter) to T-Home customers at a one-time cost of euro 149.99.

Member of the Board of Management, Marketing T-Home, Christian Illek said that the company’s Entertain Comfort IPTV service provides customers with a new dimension in high-quality TV and multimedia communications.

Illek explained that the new high-capacity Speedport W 100 Bridge, with Ruckus Wireless technology, is easy to use and gives subscribers simple access to broadband-based services, making the company’s IPTV offering even more user-friendly.

Thanks to the Ruckus system, German subscribers can now extend the location freedom they enjoy with Wi-Fi to their television viewing experience. This gives them the power to place TVs virtually anywhere in their homes without cumbersome cabling.

Selina Lo, president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless said in a statement that the partnership with Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) represents a major milestone for Ruckus as well as for the industry. Lo emphasized that this alliance signals to the world that conventional WiFi just isn't good enough for applications that require more than merely surfing the Internet.

Deutsche Telekom claims to be the first carrier in the world that to use 802.11a for its in-home wireless IPTV option. The company explains that the combination of more non-overlapping radio frequencies (RF) with BeamFlex, the patented interference and avoidance technology from Ruckus Wireless, ensures flicker-free transmission of standard and even high definition television signals through the home.

Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband and IPTV at Infonetics Research said that the progress Ruckus Wireless has made in such a short period of time is truly remarkable.

“Ruckus has catapulted its Smart Wi-Fi technology into what is arguably the de facto wireless standard for in-home IPTV distribution,” he said.
