U.K.-based Hampton Software Limited—a company that specializes in bespoke applications for VoIP and portable communications devices—today announced the release of its latest product: Atriculation for PalmOS

Articulation brings the cost savings of VoIP to personal digital assistants (PDAs) running the Palm operating system.

In a press release, Hampton Software noted that, despite the recent popularity of smartphones, PDAs still “are very capable devices and can easily be used as telephones using VoIP as an alternative to the cell phone network.”

The recent increase in WiFi (News - Alert) (News - Alert) coverage makes PDAs even more useful for this function, the company said.

“With the features offered by VoIP you can even take the same number used on your PC with you on to your PDA - you only need one contact number,” Hampton added.

Articulation works with whatever VoIP provider the user chooses, and also offers the following key features:
  • Support for WiFi, Bluetooth, and EVDO connections
  • Echo cancellation for speakerphone use
  • Secure authentication using SIP MD5
  • Support for GSM and G711 codecs, and NAT through RFC 3581
  • Symmetric RTP support
