Northeastern University Business Students To
Utilize Toshiba Portege 3500 Tablet PCs
Toshiba Computer Systems Group
(CSG), in collaboration with Northeastern University's College of
Business Administration (CBA), will make available to students the
Toshiba's Portege 3500 convertible Tablet PC operated by Microsoft's
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.
Designed to take, organize, search and convert handwritten notes, the
Portege 3500 uses a stylus and notepad to input data. Students can take
notes the traditional way, get feedback and comments from professors
electronically, edit documents by hand, as well as create documents that
have a more creative flair by inputting graphics or drawings that
complement assignments. A speech input capability further provides
students with flexibility in delivering and finalizing projects.
Beyond the availability of the Portege 3500, CSG is also supporting the
expansion of wireless computing in classrooms at Northeastern to help
students further increase efficiencies. Northeastern will continue to
increase its mobile capabilities on campus as students begin to adopt
Tablet PC technology. Dodge Hall, a part of Northeastern's College of
Business, is already 90 percent wireless. By summer's end, three or four
more additional Dodge Hall classrooms are also expected to become
wireless.
"Northeastern and Toshiba CSG have worked closely to develop an
offering that provides students access to the latest in mobile
technologies. As such, we are one of the first universities on the East
Coast to fully incorporate the Tablet PC into the classroom," said
Les Ball, senior executive professor in Northeastern's College of Business
Administration. "The faculty and staff are currently learning about
the tablet's features in order to gear up to teach this to students
entering Northeastern in the fall." Ball predicts that more students
will catch on to this latest computer rave over the summer and into the
fall and that the number of Tablet PC's at Northeastern will steadily
increase.
"Combining the power of a notebook computer with the simplicity
and convenience of pen and paper, the Portege(R) 3500 allows Northeastern
students to complete assignments faster, be more efficient in the
classroom while also providing new ways to creatively present projects to
professors and students alike," said Dan Rosensteel, vice president
of public sector for Toshiba CSG. "In addition, the Portege 3500 also
offers the portability and wireless capabilities to accommodate the needs
of today's students who are constantly on the go."
