TokBox Seeing Increased Demand for Live Video Technology to Serve Exploding English Student Population in China

TokBox, the live video, real-time communications (RTC) company, today announced it is providing WebRTC API services to global education customers with end users in China, in order to facilitate international communications and serve the exploding market of English learners there. The company is also serving telemedicine clients with patients in China, who increasingly desire face-to-face interaction with healthcare professionals abroad.

Among the education customers using the TokBox (News - Alert) API service is Cambly, which provides students from all over the world with instant access to native English speakers using live video chat, connecting students with instructors from anywhere for one-on-one tutoring sessions. The company currently provides English instruction in China, which has 250 to 350 million English learners, according to a report published by Cambridge University Press.

The TokBox Live Video API is finding success in educational markets and within learning management systems (LMS), enabling developers to quickly add video capabilities to the application workflow. The TokBox API serves a wide range of educational applications - from simple teacherstudent engagement to small groups to full classroom video capabilities.

"China is quickly becoming a huge market for Cambly, as students there increasingly want to learn English from native speakers," said Cambly co-founder and CTO Kevin Law. "China presents unique challenges as well as opportunities, with its online infrastructure being one such challenge. Since we partnered with TokBox, we've seen significant connectivity improvement for our users in China."

According to the results of the inaugural TokBox Live Video Maturity Study, three in five people surveyed either have used or are likely to use live video to speak with a tutor remotely through a language app or education platform. Most popular use cases include telepresence learning, virtual classrooms, exam proctoring and online tutoring. In healthcare, the study found that 60 percent of people either have or are likely to use live video to chat with a doctor about a non-emergency condition such as renewing a prescription.

"Using TokBox to link Chinese students with English speaking instructors from around the world, education companies like Cambly are increasingly recognizing the power of live video in education to improve student engagement, learning outcomes, accessibility and reach. At the same time, healthcare companies are recognizing the importance of providing Chinese patients with care options from providers outside their country," said TokBox CEO Scott Lomond. "Building a powerful global infrastructure enables us to provide a more reliable cross-border experience to users across China and around the world."
