Survey Proves Choosing the Right Partner is Critical When Moving to the Cloud

INetU, the customer-centric cloud company, and strategic consulting company THINKstrategies today unveiled the results of a recent survey, designed to gain insights into experiences organizations have while moving to the cloud. The survey found that 70 percent of respondents had to make changes to their design during the migration, with 52 percent of those surveyed needing adjustments within the first six months. Overall, 43 percent claimed to have had the implementation of cloud projects fail or stall and 49 percent required an increase in budget within 6 months.

The findings also indicate IT and other corporate decision-makers who select a cloud service provider based on its ability to understand their business needs and provide expert support through the planning, deployment and ongoing management stages of the migration process are more likely to be successful.

"The survey shows there are still plenty of potential pitfalls associated with migrating important business applications and processes to the cloud," said Jeffrey Kaplan, managing director, THINKstrategies. "Of the companies surveyed, those that were the most satisfied were managed by their cloud partner, which shows that choosing the best partner to design, implement, and manage the cloud environment is the key to success in the cloud."

Additional findings include:

  • 70 percent of the participants are looking for help in proactively monitoring their environment.
  • 27 percent reported that security is the most difficult function to manage across respondents' cloud environments, while 20 percent said compliance is the most challenging.
  • 65 percent said capacity planning is moderately difficult while 62 percent said provisioning falls into that category.
  • One-third of those surveyed said that their current hosting provider does not meet with them regularly to discuss how to better leverage their hosting environment to help grow their business.

"Too many organizations moving to the cloud are learning just how complex migrating to the cloud can be and are paying the price, with setbacks including project delays, re-engineering and cost overruns," said David Fowler, vice president of strategy, INetU. "This survey showcases the importance of partnering with a provider that is committed to designing a hosting solution that's aligned directly with an organization's specific business needs in order to achieve cloud success."

Underscoring the importance of support in cloud computing success, the survey found that 96 percent of organizations managed by their cloud provider are extremely satisfied with their solution. These findings reinforce the value of selecting a cloud service provider based on its ability to understand an organization's business needs and provide continued expert support through the planning, deployment and ongoing management stages of the migration process.
